Sustainable Styles to Watch Out for in 2025

Sustainable Styles to Watch Out for in 2025

A lot of companies and industries in general are slowly turning towards being more socially responsible. And with the rapid change in our environment, it must be intertwined with sustainability.

The apparel and clothing industry by itself, is a major contributor to climate change. With better alternatives for production and manufacturing, there can be a significant shift which can drastically reduce the climate change impacts caused by this sector alone.

The fashion industry has upped its game by constantly evolving with sustainable options. Who would've thought we would be using algae, and fruit leftovers to make fabrics? Or that we can now rent clothes? But it doesn't just stop at having sustainable options. Consumers too, most times are unaware of or overlook the incredible resources available to us today. By making a conscious effort to choose sustainable options, we collectively slow down the rapid pace of environmental degradation.

Here are some revolutionary changes that we can expect with sustainable fashion in 2025:

1. Circular fashion:

They say the future of fashion is circular, and we couldn't agree more. Essentially, what circular fashion means is it is a whole new system where clothes are made, designed and manufactured in such that it drastically reduces waste. As opposed to the current system that relies on fast fashion, short lifespan and eventually being dumped in landfills, circular fashion focuses on clothes made out of renewable fabrics that are easy to repair, reuse and recycle.

2. Algae:

Thanks to advanced technology, we can now use algae (yes, the kind that grows in water bodies) as an innovative and sustainable resource for creating eco-friendly products. Algae is so versatile that it can not only be turned into soft biodegradable fabric and a dye that does not harm our environment but also other alternatives to things like shoe foams, etc. Algea is one of the most sustainable materials out there as it grows quickly and doesn't require much space or resources. Algae also significantly cuts down the need for synthetic and harmful chemicals, making the process much greener.

3. Alternative fabrics:

The world of sustainable fashion will be brimming with creative, innovative options this coming year, especially with repurposing produce like apples, bananas, oranges, coconut, and the list goes on. Some of these repurposed produce turned into fabrics help with reducing food waste and animal cruelty. In addition to being biodegradable, it gives value to agricultural waste. Some of these fabrics that we will be seeing a lot in 2025 include:

Mango Leather - Overripe mangoes that are otherwise unsellable, are processed to a material that highly resembles leather, making it perfect for bags, wallets and shoes.

Orange fibres- orange juice byproducts like peel and the inner fibres are processed to a fabric that's similar to silk. This high end, sustainable option is especially valued for its ability to mimic luxurious silk.

Mushroom leather- Mycelium, the root structure of mushrooms that easily grows in controlled environments with minimal land usage and resources, makes soft, durable leather.

4. Repurposing and upcycling:

The idea with repurposing and upcycling is to take old clothes or materials and turn them into something new. You’re not just recycling here, but also giving them a new purpose and function. Now what makes upcycling slightly different is the added value, and creatives to make them more high-end. This could be adding embellishments, or intricate handwork, or even dyeing the fabric into vibrant patterns.

5. Rental fashion:

A decade ago, the idea of renting clothes seemed unusual. Sure, we rent cars and houses, but clothes? Who would've thought, right? It’s now an ever-growing, sustainable popular initiative. Not only are customers happy to save money by renting otherwise expensive outfits for special events like weddings, but it’s also helping slow down the fast fashion cycle. By choosing rentals over new pieces, we're making a significant impact on reducing waste. At One Less, every purchase you make helps plant a tree.
